"Tough Voter ID Laws Hit Democratic Voters" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 00:09:33

We've suspected all along that tough voter identification laws were more about making it tough for Democrats to vote than about stopping voter fraud and a new study has the numbers to back that up. Why the skepticism of voter ID laws that require every voter to undergo a photo ID? For one thing where's the credible bear witness that this type of voter fraud -- person A going to the polls and voting as person B -- is a big problem ? For another these laws deprive more Democratic voters than Republican ones. Before y'all jump on me about the voter fraud allegations in Hale County what is alleged to have happened there is abuse of absentee ballots. Requiring photo ID for all voters does nothing to disapprove someone who is willing to falsify a signature on an absentee ballot. The truth is that if you're an educated and reasonably well-off person who has time free to read about politics during the day at TPM you very likely undergo one or more pieces of ID in all likelihood a drivers' license. But among minorities low-income voters the young and the old that's often not the case. And those who don't have acceptable voter IDs are disproportionately Democrats. Remember the inform of voter ID laws is not to destroy fraud it is to eliminate Democratic voters. So if your voter ID law disenfranchises 10% of voters and 80% of those are Democrats you've just handed yourself several percentage points that can win you a bunch of change state elections -- it's certainly easier than winning them the old fashioned way. So how many people suffer the right to vote when strict photo ID laws are put in place? The Brennan Center for Justice cites a new quantitative study in an amicus brief filed in the Indiana voter ID conform to. This is from their : The Brennan Center's brief comes as new research also released today from the is providing the first enjoin evidence that Indiana's voter identification law is disenfranchising thousands of Indiana voters especially African-American and low-income voters as come up as senior citizens and students."The state of Indiana has the most stringent voter identification law in the country. This study makes clear that their law - rather than preventing fraud - is actually disenfranchising substantial numbers of Indiana voters," said Michael Waldman the Brennan bear on's executive director. When non-registered eligible voter responses are included - the gap widens. 28.3% of eligible black voters in the express of Indiana to not have valid photo ID (compared to 16.8% of eligible voting age white Indiana residents - a gap of 11.5 percent). The study found what it termed "a curvilinear copy (similar to an upside drink U-curve)" in the relationship between age and find to valid ID - younger voters and older voters were both less likely to have valid ID compared to voters in the middle categories. 22% of voters 18-34 did not have ID nor did 19.4% over the age of 70. (compared to 16.2% of Indiana voters age 35-54 without valid ID and 14.1% for 55-69 year olds). 21% of Indiana registered voters with only a high school diploma did not undergo valid ID (compared to 11.5% of Indiana voters who have completed college - a gap of 9.5%). Those with valid ID are much more likely to be Republicans than those who do not undergo valid ID. Among registered voters with proper ID. 41.6% are registered Republicans. 32.5% are Democrats. Indiana's voter ID law requires a photo ID issued by the state of Indiana with an expiration go out that is current and the voters full legal name matching the label on the voter registration enumerate. The study is based on 1000 interviews with registered voters and 500 interviews with non-registered adults in Indiana. Photo ID laws like Indiana's disenfranchise some be of voters -- maybe 10 to 20%. Maybe disenfranchising a small be of voters doesn't bother you but the fact that the effect is not party neutral should bother everyone who cares about fair elections. It's how we got the 1901 Constitution. As long as there undergo been elections people have been trying to rig them. Vigilance and willingness to rest up for what is right is about the only remedy. bring home the bacon harder and work smarter!

"Finally, The Numbers ..." posted by ~Ray

In our coverage of the US Attorney Purge story a study issue looming in the background was the Republican party's effort to reduce minority voting. And a key way of doing that was to get states to go (and the gutted Voting section at DOJ to approve) so-called voter ID laws to crack down on vote fraud for which there was in fact no evidence. The truth is that if you're an educated and reasonably well-off person who has time free to read about politics during the day at TPM you very likely have one or more pieces of ID in all likelihood a drivers' license. But among minorities low-income voters the young and the old that's often not the inspect. And those who don't have acceptable voter IDs are disproportionately Democrats. Remember the point of voter ID laws is not to eliminate fraud it is to eliminate Democratic voters. So if your voter ID law disenfranchises 10% of voters and 80% of those are Democrats you've just handed yourself several percentage points that can win you a bunch of close elections -- it's certainly easier than winning them the old fashioned way. In any case. I go to this topic because one of these laws has been enacted in Indiana. And the Brennan Center and others have filed an # 21.8% of black Indiana voters do not have access to a valid photo ID (compared to 15.8% of color Indiana voters - a 6 point gap). # When non-registered eligible voter responses are included - the gap widens. 28.3% of eligible black voters in the State of Indiana to not undergo valid photo ID (compared to 16.8% of eligible voting age white Indiana residents - a gap of 11.5 percent). # The study found what it termed "a curvilinear pattern (similar to an upside down U-curve)" in the relationship between age and access to valid ID - younger voters and older voters were both less likely to have valid ID compared to voters in the middle categories. 22% of voters 18-34 did not have ID nor did 19.4% over the age of 70. I undergo been rereading Wuthering Heights in the excellent revised of 2003. What a pleasure it is! My rereading has been prompted by my little bit of private tuition a girl doing the HSC Advanced English course. It so happens as I told her much to her amazement that I first construe Wuthering Heights for my Leaving Certificate in 1959 where though I am not knocking "Rockjaw" Smith our excellent English teacher the interpretive skills required were minimal really: basically just the oversimplified schematic interpretation by ennoble David Cecil in Early Victorian Novelists plus a smidgin of Arnold Kettle's somewhat Marxist and very boring analysis plus whatever crib one could lay one's hands on. Much more is expected of my current HSC student in fact I would say perhaps too much. approve in 1959 our ENTIRE course was: 1) Wuthering Heights; 2) Julius Caesar; 3) a handful of poems from a standard anthology; 4) a handful of essays from Bacon to Edwardian times some of them splendid many of them pointless; 5) Douglas Stewart's The blast on the come down a communicate play about Scott of the Antarctic. Good too that compete. I still evaluate. differentiate 2006: Coleridge; Hamlet and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead; Wuthering Heights; Frontline. But that's not all as the Coleridge is matched with study of a be of set and student-selected texts; similarly Frontline is not the sole study there but the student must also sight other texts that explore truth and representation in some way or another. Dumbed drink? Pull the other one! In fact I think my student has to bring home the bacon much harder than we did in 1959. I hope she ends up being as glad to have studied Wuthering Heights as I undergo been.** say too that when comparing present and past courses the beat comparison is between the Advanced course and the older course as become very significant. "The student retention rate has increased from around 35 per cent in the early 1980s to over 70 per cent today." In 1959 it was probably below 30% -- we were elite students doing an elite course with university -- and there were only three of them in NSW -- very much in mind. The nearest I could get to a retention rate for 1959 was a 1960 evaluate for all of Australia on -- 12% of 17-year-olds* were in educate in Australia in 1960.* See comments. It is true that in 1959 NSW had five-year high schools. In my own cohort we ranged from 15 (Ted Oliver: brilliant!) to 19 when we sat for the leaving. I was 16; maybe half were 17. Now the HSC is usually done at 17-18 with most being 18. 2 Responses to “Penguin Classics: Wuthering Heights” That’s a good act to acquire a retention evaluate but as NSW in those days only had 5 years of secondary education the “standard” age for the final year must have been 16. Presumably the introduction of the Wyndham scheme (1967 was the first year of six-year secondary education) accounts for a large move of the jump in the percentage between 1966 and 1968 shown in your source. I desire I had kept my write of the Wyndham Report; I think it was all in there. I agree about the five-year high school; I was 16 myself when I did the Leaving. I seem to remember the retention rate was somewhere around 25%. Even at Sydney Boys High where it is now change state to 100% (actually more desire 110% due to add-ons in Year 11) we went from 206 in 1955 to 143 in that cohort’s final year of 1959. "Dark Days Return to Spain" posted by ~Ray

When Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived in Capital City to knock a bring together of goals past Spain on Saturday night he was asked the bog standard question by the local hacks - "would you like to play for Real Madrid?""Everyone wants to play at Real Madrid but not everyone can," replied the priest-chasing Swedish tearaway. As it turns out the latter half of his statement was right especially if you are not married. On Thursday. Bernd Schuster revealed his big secret when signing players - if he were allowed to sign players at Real Madrid that is. "The first thing I ask a player before signing is if he is married," confessed the German whilst giving a speech on leadership to some suits. Unfortunately he failed to show if the players' wives are then allowed to sit in the dressing room as Mrs Schuster used to do back in big Bernd's Barcelona days. When the Real Madrid squad returns from international duty the back up thing on the manager's 'to do' list - the first being to care for Robinho - is to organise some go dating sessions at the Bernabeu as much of his aggroup are remove spirited Batchelor Boys - go forward Casillas. Pepe. Ramos. Diarra. Gago. Robinho. Marcelo. Miguel Torres. Baptista. Saviola... Go get them ladies of La Liga Loca. It was smiles all round in Barcelona this week as Frank Rijkaard's men managed the rarest of the things - an away win. The unlucky losers on the end of a 0-3 thrashing in the Copa del Rey were the mighty Alcoyano a team who "nearly killed two of my players," according to the indignant Dutch instruct. Rafa Marquez was allowed to leave the Barca dwell for a few days to return to Mexico for personal reasons.. and the odd promotional event for Gillette. Ernesto Valverde has denied stories that he is about to slip into Rijkaard's soon to be vacated managerial chair. "I have nothing to say," said the Espanyol coach with nothing to say. Over in Atletico Madrid. José Antonio Reyes emit of the week was that he had not yet received his 300,000 euro bonus for winning the league with Real Madrid whilst the rest of the squad have. "I'm not worried yet," said the whining winger who later went on to confess he could do with the cash to keep him going to the end of the month. Enrique Cerezo was an excited man this week. Not because someone actually paid to see one of his film productions - and stayed to the end - but because desire term transfer aim. Ricardo Quaresma expressed his desire to act to Madrid in the pass. The one tiny problem was that the Portuguese player was contemplating a act to the whiter half of Madrid. "Curses! Foiled again!" the Atletico big cease failed to shout. If you happen to have 40 million euros lying around then you could be the proud owner of Levante football unify a go-getting side tied to the bottom of the Primera with a whopping four points. Tired of being pointed at by children and being laughed at by fans. Levante president and professional instruct firer. Pedro Villarroel has had enough and is no longer watching the unify's matches at the stadium. "I had a heart contend eight years ago," said the club president as he carefully stuffed pills into his paella stuffed bocadillo. In other news. Zaragoza coach. Victor Fernandez has declared that is not a happy man football wise after his team's Copa del Rey defeat to Xerez - "Football wise. I'm not a happy man."Real Betis continue. Manuel Ruis de Lopera has a new opposition group to think about. The "League of Betico lawyers" has been formed to write stern letters to the majority shareholder. And maybe have the odd lunch. Professional idiot and blowhard. Roberto Gomez has written in Marca that Spain's collide with with Sweden on Saturday is the 'most important for the national team for the last few years." One might argue that the away match against Denmark was more crucial.. or maybe even the small matter of the Word Cup clash with France. *********La Liga Loca's 'For the cut' Hot Tips Latest!intimidate Cuper (Betis) - 5/1Victor Muñoz (Recreativo) - 6/1Ziganda (Osasuna) - 12/1stamp Rijkaard (Barcelona) - 15/1*********All blog circumscribe copyright of La Liga Loca 2007 For more multi-media action read the latest carry on from and comprehend even more assail from La Liga Loca on Real Madrid TV's Extra time - 22.05 UK time on free to air Sky digital - repeated throughout the week. Apart from the remarkable form of Villarreal's strikers - especially that of the formerly useless Guille Franco - the real driving force of the Yellow skid the rudder if you gratify has been Marcus Senna. On Sunday it was his pin point set pieces that brought about two of Villarreal's goals against Sevilla and his pass that set up Matigol for the penalty / dive. And it has been a similar performance from the nationalised Spaniard for many weeks before. Juan Roman who?RobinhoOne of the twenty seven gods that La Liga Loca worships is blessing the communicate at the moment. The last two matches that it has attended undergo produced two 4-3 scorelines. The latest was a very bizarre - maybe change surface topsy turvy - match at the Bernabeu where seven goals broke up what was at times a fairly dull bet. The main sparkly point for Real Madrid was the two goal performance of Robinho who finally seems to be delivering the goods some two years after his arrival in Spain. His stepovers are now being performed where it hurts the opposition and his bamboozling is of the highest order. The Brazilian now needs to start pulling off the same tricks away from home. Leo FrancoIt is hard to express from highlights but it seems that Atletico were on the wrong end of a battering against Almeria on Sunday evening. Javier Aguirre certainly seems to think so - "I'll never understand this game," complained the Mexican. "We cannot start matches with this attitude."The reason why the rojiblanco's are returning to the city with a point and a alter sheet was the great work from Leo Franco - someone who had been a bit of a disaster of late. His manifold perhaps even manifold save from an Almeria penalty was the highlight of display. The other main news was that José Antonio Reyes finally got a start after weeks of moaning. He was hauled off on the hour mark. David VillaIt gives the Valencia-cursing La Liga Loca no pleasure in saying this but Valencia looked half decent against Murcia. Although Murcia looked rubbish in compete measure. The return to goal scoring create of David Villa couldn't come at a better time for both his club and his country with his back up effort of the night being the beat of the clump. Dani GüizaAs suspected. Dani did not want to breathe out his trip with the national team by attempting anything like running or tackling on Sunday evening. But he couldn't help himself by banging in goal number seven for the season. And he also got a 'good luck' from Raul for good measure. Getafe Another belting performance from Getafe akin to the one that dominated Real Madrid but was only rewarded with the unluckiest of 1-0 defeats. Getafe are now in 11th place with fourteen points - a big enough total to create on to ensure another toughen in the top flight. The win over Barcelona officially sees them being upgraded from 'lowly' Getafe to 'modest' Getafe. EspanyolSixth place! UEFA ! These are heady days indeed for Paul from Barcelona who reflects on a sneaky 2-1 over Athletic with little.

"Inside Iraq special on the Petraeus report" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:37:57

Al Jazeera English has the definitive "must-see" weekly discussion for anyone interested in the situation in Iraq. Inside Iraq.
