"The United States Census 1790-1840" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 00:08:47

The first official count (after the revolution) conducted in the United States of America was the count of 1790. A national census has been conducted every 10 years since that time. The last one was taken in the year 2000 and the next one is planned for 2010. As stated in an the United States of America has enacted a 72 year privacy law meaning that census information will only be released to the general public 72 years after it was first taken. This means that the 1790 through 1930 censuses are available to the public. Now the first six censuses (1790-1840) are sadly void of much helpful information genealogically speaking. Only the name of the Head of the household is listed. If you have an ancestor that may have been listed anytime before 1840 you won't be able to determine exactly where your ancestor was living just based on census information unless they had a very unique name. Often the count information you sight prior to 1850 can only be claimed as circumstantial "proof" based on family records land records or more recent census information. Now let's take a look at the first 6 censuses and what they can tell your * label of the head of the Family* Number of free color males 16 years and up* Number of remove white males under 16 years* Number of free white females* Number of all other free persons* be of slaves * Name of the head of the family* Number of free white males under age 10* Number of free color males over 10 and under 15* Number of free white males over 16 and under 25* Number of remove white males over 26 and under 44* be of free white males age 45 and over* be of free color females under age 10* be of free white females over 10 and under 15* Number of free color females over 16 and under 25* Number of free white females over 26 and under 44* be of free white females age 45 and over* be of all other free persons* Number of slaves* Town/city and county of residence Surviving 1800 Census information is available for Connecticut. Rhode Island. South Carolina. Tennessee. Vermont and Virginia. We see that in the 1820 census the government has added the age 16 to 18 male question for military purposes and also a naturalization challenge which can be useful for determining how long an ancestor has lived within the U. S. helpful in securing naturalization papers for that ancestor. 1830 count - The 1830 Census asked each household the following: * Name of the continue of each household* be of remove white males and free white females age 0-5* Number of free white males and free white females age 5-10* Number of remove white males and free white females age 10-15* be of free white males and free white females age 15-20* Number of free color males and free white females age 20-30* Number of free white males and free color females age 30-40* be of free white males and remove color females age 40-50* Number of free white males and free white females age 50-60* Number of remove white males and free white females age 60-70* Number of free white males and free white females age 70-80* Number of free color males and free white females age 80-90* Number of remove white males and free white females age 90-100* be of remove white males and free white females over 100.* be of males slaves under age 10 over 10 and under 24 over 24 and under 36 over 36 and under 55 over 55 and under 100 over age 100.* Number of female slaves under age 10 over 10 and under 24 over 24 and under 36 over 36 and under 55 over 55 and under 100 over age 100.* Number of free black males under age 10 over 10 and under 24 over 24 and under 36 over 36 and under 55 over 55 and under 100 over age 100.* Number of remove black females under age 10 over 10 and under 24 over 24 and under 36 over 36 and under 55 over 55 and under 100 over age 100.* Number of deaf and dumb whites under age 14 over 14 and under 25 over 25 years of age.* Number of blind whites.* be of deaf and dumb slaves and free blacks under age 14 over 14 and under 25 over 25 years of age.* Number of alter slaves and remove blacks.* Number of white foreigners not naturalized. "One in seven Americans over the age of 70 suffers from dementia" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:42:37

About 3.4 million people or 13.9 percent of the population age 71 and older undergo some form of dementia the chew over found. As expected the prevalence of dementia increased dramatically with age from five percent of those aged 71 to 79 to 37.4 percent of those age 90 and older. About 2.4 million of those with dementia or 9.7 percent of the population age 71 and older were found to have Alzheimer's disease the most common create of dementia according to the study. Published in the November 2007 air of Neuroepidemiology the study is based on data from 856 men and women who participated in the Aging. Demographics and Memory chew over conducted in 2002 by researchers at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research (ISR) and Duke University Medical bear on and funded by the National Institute on Aging. The study was part of the larger ISR Health and Retirement Study a nationally representative survey of Americans age 51 and older. "These conditions affect millions of older Americans and comprehend nearly every family in some way and the situation is only going to get worse as the population ages," said Duke University researcher Brenda Plassman the lead author of the journal article. The chew over provides the first prevalence estimates based on a nationally representative consume of older adults from all regions of the United States allowing policymakers and care providers to make better plans for caring for those with dementia and their families. Plassman and co-author Kenneth Langa who is affiliated with ISR and with the U-M and Veterans Affairs Health Systems also note that the findings will assist in assessments of the impact of future treatment advances as they become available and in gauging how well the country is doing in controlling and treating Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. "These data about dementia are linked to an enormous wealth of economic health psychological and other information about these same individuals and their families over time," said Richard Suzman director of the Behavioral and Social investigate Program at the National initiate on Aging. "We can now track the impact and costs of dementia on society the economy and families in ways we never could before." For the chew over participants were assessed in their homes by a specially trained nurse and neuropsychology technician using a diagnostic protocol similar to the type of memory evaluation done in a medical clinic. The team collected detailed information about how the participant was functioning in daily activities from a knowledgeable informant usually a family member or close friend. They also administered a battery of neuropsychological tests including measures of memory orientation language attention and problem solving ability. In addition. DNA samples were collected from a cheek swab to test for the presence of the APOE e4 allele which has been linked to an increased assay of developing Alzheimer's disease. The information was reviewed in case conferences by a aggroup of Duke physicians and psychologists and final diagnoses were made by another consensus panel of experts. Overall the researchers found that Alzheimer's disease accounted for approximately 69.9 percent of all dementia while vascular dementia - often caused by stroke - accounted for 17.4 percent. With increasing age. Alzheimer's disease accounted for progressively more of the dementia cases so that in the 90+ age group it comprised 79.5 percent of dementia cases compared to 46.7 percent among those in their 70s. The researchers also examined how education gender and APOE genotype were related to dementia. They open that the more years of education the lower the risk of dementia. After controlling for education levels and age they found no significant difference in dementia risk between males and females. As expected they open that the presence of one or two APOE e4 alleles was linked with significantly higher risk of developing dementia. To aid comparison of their findings with estimates from earlier studies using a lower minimum age the researchers combined their estimates for ages 71 and over with those from other studies for ages 60 to 70. This resulted in an estimated total of 3.8 million people with dementia including just over 2.5 million with Alzheimer's disease. The only previous national estimate of dementia prevalence obtained by extrapolating from regional samples was 2.9 million the researchers noted. "Our study finds that the prevalence of dementia is about 30 percent higher than this estimate," Langa said. Four previous national estimates of the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease were all obtained by extrapolation from regional samples. These estimates ranged from 2.1 million to 4.5 million. "What this study and others before it confirm is that there are millions of Americans living with Alzheimer's and dementia and that be is estimated to change at an epidemic evaluate if we don't do something about it," said William Thies vice president of Medical and Scientific Relations at the Alzheimer's Association. "The nation's leaders be to act now to go research for effective treatments and provide care and support to those living with Alzheimer's." "As the elderly population in the United States grows the be of individuals with dementia ordain certainly change magnitude tremendously," said U-M economist David Weir who directs the ISR Health and Retirement Study. "Planning for the long-term care needs of this vulnerable population ordain change state increasingly important. This new data used along with related data from the Health and Retirement Study should increase our nation's ability to successfully cater the needs of an aging U. S population and those who like them."

"Progression of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation to persistent atrial ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:31:54

The experimental concept that “atrial fibrillation (AF) begets AF” implies that atrial tachyarrhythmia (AT)/AF burden uniformly increases over time. However the temporal patterns of paroxysmal AT/AF charge progression its conversion to persistent AF and the relationship to underlying disease in humans are unknown. We analyzed the add up daily AT/AF burden in patients with concomitant bradycardia and paroxysmal AF to investigate these issues. Three hundred thirty patients with a history of paroxysmal AF (mean age 70 ± 10 years; 61% male) were implanted with a pacemaker that automatically recorded the cumulative daily AT/AF burden. Persistent AT/AF was defined as 7 consecutive days with >23 hours of AT on the device data logs. Antiarrhythmic drug therapy was required to be stable for at least 7 months. Average follow-up was 401 ± 123 days. Seventy-eight patients (24%) progressed to persistent AT/AF during the follow-up period with a convey interval of 147 ± 149 days. Mean AT/AF burden increased progressively (slope 14 s/d. P < .001) over 500 days after enter and median AT/AF charge also increased (P < .01) in this subgroup of patients. This increase was highly correlated with the presence of structural heart disease (P < .001). There was a concomitant decrease in atrial premature defeat (APB) frequency. Most patients transitioning to persistent AF were in sinus rhythm with minimal AT/AF burden in the days immediately before persistent AF. Neither mean nor median AT/AF charge increased over time in patients remaining in paroxysmal AF (slope 0 s/d. P = .7) despite a higher APB frequency than in patients with heart disease (P =.003) and a higher likelihood of daily AT/AF events (P < .001). Temporal patterns of AT/AF burden in patients developing persistent AF show a progressive change magnitude with a sudden transition to persistent AF. This is more consistent with substrate changes rather than increased density of triggering APBs or paroxysmal AT/AF events. Thus progression to persistent AF is probably related to an AF substrate which is undergoing progressive structural remodeling owing to heart disease and other factors and is now suddenly capable of sustaining prolonged or multiple ATs. Therapies directed at the atrial substrate may be needed to prevent persistent AF. Reprint requests: Sanjeev Saksena. MD. FHRS. FESC. FACC.
